Design Dynamics

LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE AND URBAN DESIGN

While landscape designs may appear finite and fixed, their continuing effects on people’s perceptions and behaviour are far reaching and dynamic.

We can, for example, create a simple hierarchy of spaces that encourage a range of different uses. We can also achieve specific behavioural effects: shared surfaces, which allow pedestrians and motor traffic to mix, improve safety because drivers slow down when priority is uncertain.

Landscape elements can be highly effective in relieving stress. Water features are well-known for their calming properties. Trees are also proven to boost psychological well-being, in addition to improving air quality, providing shade and wildlife habitat, and growing more impressive every year.
