Attwood Green Health Centre is a state-of-the-art primary care facility which brings together a range of health and welfare services under one roof. The health centre has been designed not only to contribute to the wellbeing of the growing local population, but also the wider regeneration of an inner city area being transformed as part of Birmingham City Council’s Park Central initiative.

Project Overview

Commissioned by Heart of Birmingham Teaching Primary Care Trust, the Attwood Green Health Centre is a 4,500sq.m, six-storey development located in a prominent position on Birmingham’s Bath Row.

The dimensions of the building and its play on the ‘urban boulevard’ feel of the street ensures the health centre fits in effortlessly with the neighbouring regeneration, yet its vibrant exterior sets it apart from the rest. The contemporary design of the health centre and the materials chosen reflect the aspirational feel of the up-and-coming borough and create a clear perception of the quality of care patients can expect.

Designed very much with the patient experience in mind, the building’s column free construction and natural ventilation make waiting areas pleasant and spacious, while wayfinding has been made simple and intuitive through the use of colour coding and an impressive five-storey atrium to signal the main entrance.

A water theme runs throughout the interior design and community artwork to create a relaxing environment to put patients and staff at ease.

  • The move has had a really positive effect on staff and patients and we’ve received so much great feedback since it opened. The building is spacious and light and gives each practice enough space for it to feel like their own but with all the benefits of shared resources.

Project Benefits

  • Considered build has increased flexibility for the future –

Designed on a grid system, the building structure has minimal columns to give more flexibility for room and space planning. Partition walls can be easily moved to allow the spaces to grow, contract and adapt to the future needs of its tenants.

  • Improved comfort levels and reduced energy usage through natural cooling –

Ventilation ducts incorporated within the framework during construction and fins on the side of the building to provide shade all help to keep the environment cool and more comfortable for patients and staff without the need for costly air conditioning.

  • Community support through stakeholder engagement –

By engaging health professionals, stakeholders and local residents early on in the design process, the result is a well-loved and well-used building which has received exceptionally positive feedback from end users.
