April Project Overview
Posted: 30 April 2025
As we celebrate our 50th year in business, we’re reflecting on 50 of our most memorable projects. We have been featuring them over on our social media channels.
In April, we looked back at the following four projects…
Broxbourne: ONE’s engineers were commissioned by Borough of Broxbourne Council for a business and technology centre to carry out MEP design to stage 4, stage 5 client side to police the design. The new business and technology centre was set to provide an innovation hub for tech firms and SMEs, that provide 3,209sqm of flexible space comprising a mix of offices, studios and training facilities. A highly sustainable solution, with the brief requiring BREEAM Very Good, the design achieves an EPC A with a whole roof of Photovoltaic (PV) panels and a wealth of EV charging points. The structural design promoted the use of low carbon materials and the design is futureproofed with the hope that the waste heat energy recovered from the neighbouring datacentre can be recovered and utilised to heat the innovation centre. The MEP solution needed to support the client in their application for a Platinum rated Wired Score which indicates an exceptional standard of wired infrastructure and wireless network to boost connectivity for tenants.
St Richards Hospice: Designed to reflect comfort, calm and dignity, St Richards, the two-story hospice provides 24-hour residential care, day care and respite services, in a new, purpose-built facility. By working closely with hospice staff, ONE was able to deliver a building that offered increased service provision, greater flexibility and ensured both privacy and dignity for patients and their relatives. Following a courtyard-style layout, the space has been configured to separate individual and public areas. Single-bedded rooms open out onto private patios to increase fresh air, improve natural light and help to bring the beauty of the landscape to those who can no longer venture out easily.
Forest of Dean Community Hospital: The Forest of Dean Community Hospital, officially opened by HRH The Princess Royal, stands as a milestone project for ONE. ONE was appointed by Speller Metcalfe to design an innovative new community hospital in the Forest of Dean for the Gloucestershire Health and Care NHS Foundation Trust, replacing two outdated healthcare facilities. The hospital was designed to meet BREEAM Excellent standards and was built to help ease the strain on acute care hospitals in the region.
Bird Box: Located in the heart of Bromsgrove town centre, The Bird Box transformed a derelict, disused site into a vibrant “mean while” public space and mixed-use community hub, injecting new life into this prominent location. Named after a feature found on historic Bromsgrove shopfronts, The Bird Box provided a flexible platform for pop-up and mobile businesses, supporting local entrepreneurs and startups. The design included a stage, creative seating, and open areas for inclusive community use. It was particularly beneficial to the community during COVID as a safe meeting place. We’re excited that our new permanent design for the commercial and cultural hub builds on the legacy of The Bird Box. The proposals for the former Market Hall site includes two new buildings and a greener public realm and the opening up of the culvert. A new pavilion will serve as a flexible community space for exhibitions and markets, while the second building will host high-quality food and drink businesses and commercial accommodation, contributing to Bromsgrove’s growing night-time economy. This is currently under construction on site with a completion date in early 2026.
