Landscape Architecture

Landscape Architecture

From landscape strategies, public inquiries and landscape visual impact assessments, to the detailed design and delivery of creative landscape schemes worldwide, ONE’s highly experienced landscape architects will give any project a valuable new dimension.

Our team has a reputation for inspiring, intelligent designs that are rooted in a thorough knowledge of site to ensure a sensitive and creative response. We bring a wealth of experience to deliver exemplar developments that enhance the environment, regenerate communities and inspire ownership and pride.

Our specialists provide optimum value from the earliest stage of a project. A landscape-led approach is embedded at the heart of a project from the very outset, whatever the size of the commission. This provides a sound understanding of the site, its character, views and any sensitivities and opportunities that need to be taken into consideration to inform and shape the development of the design.

The landscape team collaborates with all other disciplines, including the architects and civil engineers, to ensure the masterplanning of the development is site specific, inspiring and responsive to its environment. This approach is aspirational and creative while grounded in a thorough understanding of what will appeal to a developer.  From the client’s perspective this provides the most appropriate and sensitive site solution, which is received well by the planners, and ensures the most commercially beneficial returns on the site.

Attractive and skilled designs

Our landscape architects and urban designers are skilled at understanding and integrating the myriad features of a site. Members of our team have worked on landscape visual impact assessments for some of Europe’s largest schemes. These include: offshore and onshore wind farms, Heathrow Terminal 5, a state-of-the-art animal welfare centre located in the green belt, business parks and numerous housing developments ranging from 60 to 800 units. These assessments are a valuable design tool as we identify and reduce, through responsive design, any significant visual and landscape effects. This realises the full potential of a site for development and is founded on genuine design integrity.

Planning challenges, ecology, circulation, place making, infrastructure, drainage and economic viability are some of the other facets that are considered in producing a design proposal that is beautiful, functional and of lasting quality.

We make extensive use of 3D modelling and perspective renders, along with technically verified photo-montages and flyover visualisation, to bring landscape and masterplanning proposals alive for clients. These are particularly helpful when presenting schemes and alternative scenarios in workshops and public consultations.

Creating a sense of place

Underpinning every commission, however complex, is a heartfelt aspiration to create places where people will want to live, work and visit. Ensuring new developments are an integral part of the local fabric is a recurring challenge for urban designers.

Along with good stakeholder engagement, one of the most effective strategies for establishing a new development is to maintain a sense of place by strengthening visual and physical ties with the neighbourhood. This can be done at the masterplan scale by aligning the development with desire lines and landmarks. At street level, however, links can be formed by creating new gateways or removing obstacles to give people better visual and physical access to the new scheme. Sensitive use of paving materials, lighting, tree planting, street furniture and bespoke art can further enhance the transformation.
