June Project Overview

Posted: 26 June 2025

As we celebrate our 50th year in business, we’re reflecting on 50 of our most memorable projects. We have been featuring them over on our social media channels.

In June we looked back at the following four projects…

Birmingham Dogs Home: The Birmingham Dogs Home, designed by ONE, is a modern, purpose-built facility that builds on over a century of service to the West Midlands, having been originally established in 1892. The former city-centre site was no longer fit for purpose, offering limited space and no dedicated outdoor exercise areas. The new location, set on former agricultural land near Birmingham Airport, provides excellent transport links and a significantly improved environment for the dogs’ welfare. The design was guided by a comprehensive landscape and visual impact assessment, ensuring the development was sensitive to its Green Belt setting. This informed a landscape-led masterplan that not only mitigated visual impact but also enhanced the character of the surrounding area. Measures included the use of green roofs and a carefully considered building profile that sits harmoniously within the landscape. The facility can accommodate up to 150 dogs, with spacious kennels, secure outdoor runs, and dedicated veterinary areas. Natural light, ventilation, and biophilic design features have been thoughtfully integrated, creating a calm, sustainable, and low-stress environment for both animals and staff.

St Johns Medical Centre: St John’s House Medical Centre is a modern, two-storey facility purpose-built to support the growth of a thriving GP practice in Worcester. Designed to accommodate future expansion and enhance its role as a hub for teaching and training, the centre plays a key part in shaping the next generation of healthcare professionals. Strategically positioned at the gateway to the new University Park development along the A44, the building stands as a landmark within this forward-thinking business, science, health, and enterprise hub led by the University of Worcester. ONE delivered the project as a fully integrated multidisciplinary design team, drawing on in-house expertise across structural engineering, building services, interior architecture, and landscape design. With a strong focus on sustainability and cost-efficiency, the result is a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rated facility, one of the lowest carbon buildings ever designed by ONE.

Blues Kitchen: ONE’s MEP team was commissioned to refurbish a music venue into an exciting new bar, restaurant and concert hall in Manchester. The project required a full, detailed MEP design and liaison with several specialists for an impressive hospitality venue featuring a concert hall with a 500-person capacity. The MEP team developed all necessary schedules and calculations, delivering solutions that addressed the challenges of working within an older building. With limited space for plant equipment and strict constraints on service routes, the team overcame these limitations through innovative design. The final solution included a new ventilation strategy, complete drainage system, power distribution, fire alarm and security systems, and an entirely new lighting scheme.

Quarry Restoration and Eco Village Development: The Worcestershire County Council competition aimed to generate imaginative ideas for restoring sand and gravel quarries, guided by sustainable development principles, benefiting local communities, creating business opportunities, and enhancing biodiversity. The site also lies within the sensitive Green Belt. Our design embraces the quarry as part of human progress, something to celebrate, not hide. Its forms reflect natural landforms shaped by quarrying, with each quarry, like a fingerprint, unique to its place. We see this as one of several distinctive destinations across the Midlands, connected, yet individually special, for people and wildlife to explore, enjoy, and stay. The thumb print forms a distinctive art feature, attracting visitors to the site. It will also become a habitat for pioneer plant communities, as the gravel banks are gradually colonised over time.
