Washwood Heath Health & Wellbeing Centre: Forward Thinking Birmingham

Project Overview

ONE’s architects, interior designers and M&E engineers have developed a design to transform previous clinical consultation spaces within Washwood Heath Health and Wellbeing Centre into a new community hub for Forward Thinking Birmingham.

The hub will provide support to young people who have mental health needs such as anxiety, eating disorders, stress and depression.

The design includes a new reception and private waiting area, 5 consultation rooms, family therapy space and physical examination rooms. An environment is created for the safe delivery of services, with the workflow between staff, patients with mental health conditions and other patients accommodated.

Effective architecture and interior design were utilised to provide attractive, comfortable, and calming conditions for patients. The design also maximised natural lighting in the existing building, which was also designed by ONE, to create a light and airy environment, as well as energy efficient LED lighting where required.

The interior design prioritises a nurturing and uplifting environment aimed at fostering a sense of safety and comfort for young people. Soft, calming colours dominate the palette, with hues of blues, greens, and warm neutrals creating a serene atmosphere. Bold artwork is featured on the walls, offering encouragement and promoting positivity. Overall, the design scheme aims to create a supportive and inviting environment that promotes healing, growth, and resilience for young individuals seeking mental health support.

Shared staff welfare facilities were provided as well as support space with offices for administration staff to the back of house areas.
